Thoughts on Travel to Thailand

February 28, 2009
Makati City,
Philippines

Today has been a relaxed Saturday. One happy moment was an unexpected find at Fully Booked in Greenbelt 5. I thought the cute little blank-page journal would be perfect to fit into my shoulder bag when I travel. I have a larger-sized journal which I keep at home and which is also cat-themed.

When I got home I set the little blue journal by the side of the travel book I had for Thailand (and other SE Asian nations.)

Looking at the book’s cover and the blank pages of my spanking brand new notebook, I suddenly grabbed a red pen and scribbled some verses. Not that I am aspiring to be a poetess who seeks to be published, but sometimes writing down haikus and short lines helps me “unload” my mind of subconscious worries and thoughts…or helps me to amplify happy feelings.

I was reminded of a tv show wherein the folks who traveled around their country brought pen and paper to draw sketches or write a short poem when they visited a place. In my case, I have to use my imagination since I don’t think I will be in a meditative mood by the time I get to Bangkok 🙂

black, dark silhouettes…
temples against the blue sky.
forgotten god-kings.
….

soft velvet blanket
crushed under my fingertips…
blank gaze of worry
….

wood boat sways gently
with its colorful burden.
Floating market day…
….

One day in Bangkok –
Buddhist temples and beaches.
I smell the spices.

changed just now to:
One day in Bangkok –
Buddhist temples and beaches.
Spices permeate the air.

Chao Phraya river –
sing songs with water and wind….
I shall listen intently.

* The Blue Cats and Butterflies cover on the journal I bought was designed by Laurel Burch. She is a self-taught artist and “flower child” who lives in California. In the 1960s she sold handmade jewelry on the streets of Sanfo.  She continues today to create vibrant images of whimsy and allure with paper and paint.

I included a picture of the journal here, because it made me think also of Thai silks in dark blue.

I echo Che’s idea/suggestion especially the “do it now” part. You’ll love Macau. You’ll surely love the food. It’s also great to just go around the main center and the side streets right after a visit to the nearby ruins of St.Paul. It’s also a shooter’s paradise. Marami din Pinoy who could show you the sites. If you’d like to test your guts, try the Macau Tower bungy jump. It’s reputedly the highest elevated level of bungy jump. Check out:

you are right..I don’t like casinos…I ate the smoke…and the times I’ve been in the casinos in Cebu can be counted on one hand..I can’t even win against the slot machine maski isang beses lang sana…hmph…

probably also the reason di rin ako mag click if las vegas and gambling lang ang pakay…

Oh Katisha,and here i was expecting your eta!

Roger, if I plan a trip …it usually doesn’t push through…hahaha..that I’ve noticed…

those spur of the moment trips have a way of working out…

I’m trying to see if two of my friends who used to be in KL before are still there..but definitely am going to visit KL too this year or next at the most…I’ve been to Malaysia before, but not KL..so the incentive this time is to see you guys in your natural environment…hahaha!

Wow super cheap naman ang airfares from Manila – bakit ganun. My friend and I had plans to go to Bangkok (sana) Feb. 25-28 (that being her only day-off) kaso we could’nt get a confirm flight back Narita via United Airlines lang since she is with that company , sayaaaaang! Nakaset pa naman ang mind ko sa spa/massage at the food daw is oishi – palpak na naman!!! Happy trip.

hmm..how about roundabout way po?

like punta muna kayo dito sa Manila..hehehe…I think Cebu Pacific from Osaka would be cheap…sama na rin visit kina Sir B di ba?

tapos kuha po kayo ng flight from Manila to Bangkok…
yung sa Ceb Pac yata ay Airbus naman so not that bad…

teka..Che…anong say mo?
ok ba yung mga CP flights from MNL/OSAKA and back?
I have to confirm this part with her…

Hi Cat,

Enjoy your trip. I’ve never been to Bangkok (except for the airport) so I don’t know much about the city, but with so many One ASEAN group members there I am sure you’ll have a great time!

Take care.

Hey, Cat. Did you know here’s a thing/experience called “a night in Bangkok?” You can tell us about it later.

actually I was singing in the shower earlier…”one night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble…”

eto pala ang lyrics for that part –

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can’t be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

oy, oy..I hope nobody gets mad or offended with my posting of this song and some of its lyrics..its very danceable…

2. what are the top 3 or 5 dishes/viands/food to taste while in Bangkok?

3. what would be the best souvenirs (aside from pictures) to bring back to one’s homeland from a visit to Bangkok?

Singapore Sling: Of Pork Ribs and PCs (album)

6th December 2008
Singapore

The day after Christmas was the day I would be proceeding with acquiring a laptop to replace my old PC as it was fast on its way to becoming a silent and dust-laden tribute to IBM’s T21s.

As this was obviously something which would take some time (those who know me when I shop for electronic stuff can attest to this), Helene, Loo and I first stopped at a restaurant in Rangoon Road so I could taste authentic bak kut teh and so we could have some energy for the grueling task ahead. As it is, the dish was said to have been invented in Port Klang for port coolies there in the early 20th century, to supplement their meager diet and as a tonic to boost their health and energy.

From wikipedia:
Bak kut teh (Hokkien: 肉骨茶) is a Chinese soup popularly served in Malaysia, Singapore, China and also, cities of neighbouring countries like Batam of Indonesia and Hat Yai of Thailand. The name literally translates as “meat bone tea”, and, at its simplest, consists of meaty pork ribs in a complex broth of herbs and spices (including star anise, cinnamon, cloves, dang gui, and garlic), boiled together with pork bones for hours. However, additional ingredients may include offal, varieties of mushroom, lettuce, and pieces of dried tofu. Light and dark soy sauce are also added to the soup during cooking, with varying amounts depending on the variant. Chinese tea of various kinds (the Tieguanyin variety is especially popular in the Klang Valley area of Malaysia) is also usually served in the belief that it dilutes or dissolves the copious amount of fat consumed in this pork-laden dish. Bak kut teh is typically a famous morning meal.

While going around and around Sim Lim, Loo finally suggested for me to eat some snacks first before I decided on my final laptop. This was my introduction to the tadpole-sago 🙂

Finally, after more deliberation, I went back to the vendor who agreed to my asking for additional 3 GB memory in addition to the freebies he offered. I left the store with a Compaq CQ-20. Afterwards, we dropped by Roland’s place as I had actually asked him to make me some kinilaw (raw fish soaked in vinegar) as I had missed eating it.

Wow, talaba, one of my favorite foods. Cat, did you know that maraming oysters around Vancouver? In some areas along the coastline pupulutin mo lang or pry off the rocks yung mga talaba. Unfortunately may limit na 15 oysters per day, kung sobra at mahuli ka may fine.

Category: Appetizers & Snacks
Style: Italian
Special Consideration: Quick and Easy
Servings: 4

Description:
I was obviously inspired by “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers” line today.

However, I do love peppers and pickled peppers make for a delicious antipasto or pizza topping, wouldn’t you agree? Delicious also in pasta sauce, or wherver you would otherwise use peppers.

Ingredients:
1 kg mixed red and yellow peppers
4 basil leaves
2 bay leaves
5 black peppercorns
2 cloves of peeled garlic
1 pint white wine vinegar

Directions:
Preheat the grill to hot. Halve and seed the peppers. Place them skin up and grill for 15 minutes until charred.

Place the peppers in a plastic bag to sweat for 10 minutes. Peel the skin off. Slice the peppers into thick strips then set aside to cool.

Gently bruise the basil leaves between your fingers and put in a sterilized jar with the peppers, peppercorns, herbs and garlic. Add the vinegar.

Seal and use within 6 months.

Tip: when peeling the charred skin, hold the peppers over a bowl to catch the juice. Which can then be added to the jar when you put all ingredients in.

Anime as an Education Tool for the Unwary Otaku!

“This is what you SO richly deserve for watching anime at ungodly hours and inevitably being curious afterwards…” – I could have sworn this sentence was flashing mockingly like an orange-neon sign on the wall facing my catatonic self.

I sometimes cannot reign in my innate curiosity.

Well, if curiosity killed the cat, in my case, I devoutly hope it selectively kills the pimples part of me resulting from the lack of sleep. My bleary-eyed, shiny-nosed face staring at the computer screen’s spewed-out list from googling “Schrödinger” at 4 a.m., was undoubtedly going to be lavishly decorated with those little buggers.

How in the world did I end up at 4 in the morning trying to wrap my itty-bitty gray cells around the concepts of quantum mechanics?

The only “quantum” I’ve ever dabbled in was the tv show “Quantum Leap” and yet I have valiantly (you can interchange that with “foolishly”) leaped into this unknown territory.

I gazed incredulously at the simplistic drawing which was supposed to illustrate the “thought experiment”, nay, the “paradox” – or rather…the resulting “Verschränkung”.

Maybe I could get away by innocently citing old age? Or maybe I could use mental exhaustion as an excuse? Uhmm, how about anime overdose?

But I had re-read the paragraph about Schrödinger’s cat for the second time, or was it third?…and my synapses rebelled by determinedly marching off to bed in their signature Hello Kitty pajamas (traitors, the whole lot of them!) while the rest of my body was still draped uncomfortably on the prickly-looking chair – leaving me vapidly gazing like one of Hellsing’s ghouls into the computer screen – though at least, my mouth was not agape with dripping drool.

“… A cat is penned up in a steel chamber, along with the following device (which must be secured against direct interference by the cat): in a Geiger counter there is a tiny bit of radioactive substance, so small that perhaps in the course of the hour, one of the atoms decays, but also, with equal probability, perhaps none; if it happens, the counter tube discharges, and through a relay releases a hammer that shatters a small flask of hydrocyanic acid. If one has left this entire system to itself for an hour, one would say that the cat still lives if meanwhile no atom has decayed. The psi-function of the entire system would express this by having in it the living and dead cat (pardon the expression) mixed or smeared out in equal parts.

It is typical of these cases that an indeterminacy originally restricted to the atomic domain becomes transformed into macroscopic indeterminacy, which can then be resolved by direct observation….”

*Groan*

“…. and all this mental exercise just because I wanted to know how Alucard died? Bloody vampires! ” was my fading thought as I surrendered my head to the strangely inviting wooden surface of the table and snored the rest of the early morning away.

Notes from wiki and other sources:

Schrödinger’s cat is a thought experiment, often described as a paradox, devised by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. It illustrates what he saw as the problem of the Copenhagen interpretation ofquantum mechanics applied to everyday objects. The thought experiment presents a cat that might be alive or dead, depending on an earlier random event. In the course of developing this experiment, he coined the term Verschränkung — literally, entanglement.

*Alucard (アーカード Ākādo) is a fictional character and the protagonist in the Hellsing anime and manga series created by Kohta Hirano. A powerful vampire, Alucard works with the Hellsing organization against other vampires and evil forces. He has a range of supernatural techniques including enhanced strength. He fights with ferocity and often extreme cruelty, rarely intending to kill until his target has been disabled and humiliated, while frequently allowing enemies more than one chance to kill him. It is stated in volume 8 of the manga, that he is Count Dracula. Soon after the events in the book, Van Helsing somehow gains control of Dracula, renaming him Alucard and leaves him as a servant of the Hellsing family.

Otaku (おたく/オタク) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime manga, and video games.

* About Hellsing:

Vampires are real. And it is the responsibility of Hellsing – an organization hidden from the public eye and funded by the British government – to cover up the frightening reality as well as to protect the blissfully ignorant people from the blood-sucking monsters.

Not only is Hellsing armed with a military force of its own, it possesses secret weapons of which the most powerful is ironically, a vampire. Named Alucard (‘Dracula’ spelt backwards), it is no ordinary blood-sucker, but reigns as the oldest and most powerful vampire in existence, only under the control of Hellsing, led by its young and stern heiress Integra Hellsing

Sadistic, arrogant and extremely powerful, Alucard delights in exterminating its own kind just to prove his superiority. It works with Victoria Seras, a policewoman-turned-fledgling vampire struggling to come to terms with her new identity, along with the enigmatic and lethal butler Walter Donez.

*SPOILERS for those who do not know the manga ending*

—-

and…IMHO its really cool how Alucard was killed off, finally…

but the trick with the character Schrödinger and how he managed to do this to the invincible Alucard ..and how this is related to the above paradox…

Schrödinger “carried the will of the self-observing Schrödinger’s Cat” and “as long as he recognizes himself, he’s everywhere and nowhere.” But now that he is consumed by Alucard and is mixed with millions of other minds, he can no longer recognize himself, and by extension neither can Alucard, the one who has absorbed him. Whilst neither are technically dead, they do not exist in any location because they cannot recognize themselves, and have thus become “No more than a set of imaginary numbers.”

HOWEVER!

Once again. Yet, Alucard manages, in the end after 30 years, to return…and its still pretty cool how thats explained away…hehehe!

though other peeps might say it was a bummer on how it all ended…oh well, not all good things last…

and what was most interesting is that I learned something:

Schrödinger’s Cat:

A cat, along with a flask containing a poison, is placed in a sealed box shielded against environmentally induced quantum decoherence. If an internal Geiger counter detects radiation, the flask is shattered, releasing the poison that kills the cat. The Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics implies that after a while, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead.

Yet, when we look in the box, we see the cat either alive or dead, not a mixture of alive and dead.

ehehe..parang obvious no?

My take if one is alive or dead, emphasis on the or, lies on our belief on what death is. In other words: what is the matter? Matter! Conventional wisdom says that when a cat is no longer breathing and is, in fact, decaying, it is already dead. But then the atoms that made up the cat when it was alive has transformed or transferred into other matter. Stinky air, for instance. Amoy ng nabubulok na pusa. The pusa has vanished into thin air. But is it dead? The metaphysical believers will say no. The cat, or the spirit of the cat, is alive and well. And may even inhabit the vessel of a lady watching anime at 4am in the morning.

And who bests Alucard (before we see the epilogue I mean)?

* SPOILER ALERT*

…in case you haven’t seen or known about the Hellsing ending…and don’t want to know about it at this point…do not read further 🙂

——

Junior Warrant Officer Schrödinger (シュレディンガー准尉, Junior Warrant Officer Shuredingā) is a fictional character in the Hellsing manga series by Kouta Hirano.

Schrödinger is a catboy (Werwolf would be the military unit he serves in), and was created by Doc.

He has the form of a young boy, with cat ears and a perpetual smirk, dressing in a Hitler Youth uniform and holding the rank of Oberstammführer (warrant officer). Usually found sitting underneath the Major’s throne like a pet, he also acts as an envoy for Millennium.

Due to his ability to be “everywhere and nowhere” at the same time, he entered the Hellsing mansion without tipping off their defenses to deliver a message; after Integra orders Alucard to shoot him in the head, he later reappeared unscathed back at Millennium’s headquarters.

This ability, his name, and his being feline are obviously a reference to the famous “Schrödinger’s cat” scenario in quantum physics.

hi Che,

no I didn’t book..I do not usually buy Cebu Pacific Air these days…I think nakwento ko na yata yung two times I’ve tried it which were bad trips…at parang sabi ko…ano ba yan, baka third time, lulubog na ako sa dagat…ehehehe 🙂

also, I am not sure if its a typo..bakit parang 1 day sale lang…till Nov 8…e nakita ko sa Inbox ko pinadala Nov 8..:-) e …di…its finished! ano_ba_yan?

can’t go also leave on the Jan-March months…planning ako for Australia and Oma Lucy..e have to pile up my available days na nag-forced deductions na…*sigh*

best time sa Japan will be in cherry blossom time and autumn-time…unless gusto mo mag snow/winter in Hokkaido..

as for Loo, nag txt back nga sya sa akin about his mom, ang bilis ng happenings nga eh…but I pray that she will not be in too much pain..and secondly I’m still hoping may mangyayari pa rin in the meantime…

oops, how enticing naman..pati ID mo madame..:)

alam mo di ba ang connecting flight namin from Hongkong to Manila is Cebu Pacific..we’ve paid, but until now hindi pa napapadala ang online ticket namin…hmmm…I hope na ang international service is better..

is that true na 15 kilos check in and 7 kilos hand carry..this international ha..

thanks for sharing..
muwaaahhh..

hi Nona,

maybe you can send them an email..or wala ba silang toll free number for international callers?

I am not sure about the 15 kilos check-in..para naman domestic yan na baggage limit ah..di international..unless of course its a promo fare (I mean, I did get on a PAl flight na limited din ang baggage allowance kc…that was from Manila to Bangkok). If you check in as a group, maybe that will help para isang tambak na baggage?

I will talk again to our agent..but that’s what I read through internet as to the clauses of Cebu Pacific..
thanks Cuh!

weird though coz supposedly international has bigger baggage allowance…

pero kc they are cheaper than other airlines, kaya siguro ganon ang stipulation 🙂

ate, seriously.. about P3000 per way to go to Incheon? That’s really cheap! Is Cebu Pacific safe to fly?

Is Cebu Pacific safe to fly?

You fly from Cebu, you land in the Pacific. That’s why it’s called Cebu Pacific (hehehe… couldn’t help it Cat.)

oh no worries Tochie…Pinoy humor 🙂

di ba they also say that if you fly Asian Spirit….insert joke here similar to above pattern….

I’ve asked Che before about these cheaper-airfare airlines…Zest Air etc.

I noticed a pattern when she answers – this and that plane is used for this or that trip…I get the impression that since its a bigger plane being used, mas ok 🙂

sabagay, that is not the whole picture naman..you can have Concordes ferrying you back and forth but the maintenance sucks or the pilots are blind as bats…(which actually is not correct, but I digress..) so dedbol pa rin if ever something bad happens …hehehe…

I don’t think I’ve reassured Kryzzie…ehem…

Daniel Deronda (notes)

I finally saw the ending of the “Daniel Deronda” movie I was seeing in snippets on cable tv for the last week.

Daniel Deronda is a novel by George Eliot, first published in 1876.

It was the last novel she completed and the only one set in the contemporary Victorian society of her day. Its mixture of social satire and moral searching, along with a sympathetic rendering of Jewish proto-Zionist and Kaballistic ideas has made it a controversial final statement of one of the greatest of Victorian novelists.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I only saw parts of the movie almost every other night of this week at different hours, but luckily enough, each time I saw it, the part I saw was already progressing.
– and it was only tonight I found out the title and that it was based on George Eliot’s novel.
I’ve missed reading classics and novels such as these. Oh well, movies sometimes make it faster for me in this fast world.
Blast it! The cable went off near the end. May power outage every now and then here and in specific areas. I guess it was the turn of Mandaue where the cable companies are.
I hope they show it again.
