the ones being sold commercially yata Cath … check on ingredients … may SUGAR ! hehehe talaga ha? hmm..coz I just usually buy like Sue Bee clover honey off the shelves here (well actually, it was for my dad who visited, I normally don’t really take a lot of sugar, brown or white when I drink my tea unless I put milk in)…
I’ve not come across honey I bought na may ingredient na sugar listed on its back…hmm… come to think of it, when I was in Cebu, and we were walking on the sidewalks near Fuente Osmena…there was a man who looked to be selling honeycombs…ewan lang if it was a true one… |
and for those who may be interested in verifying if its pure honey or not, I saw this link: http://dailyknowhow.wordpress.com/2007/06/04/how-to-verify-the-purity-of-honey/
the tests: o The dissolving test. * Get a glass of water. This and a tablespoon of honey are all you need for the first test. * Empty the honey into the water. If the honey is impure, it will dissolve in the water- the most common additive to honey is syrup of jaggery, which dissolves. If it is pure, the honey will stick together and sink as a solid lump to the bottom of the glass. * This test can also be completed by mixing equal parts honey and methylated spirits (denatured alcohol). Pure honey will settle to the bottom. Impure honey is more likely to remain dissolved and make the solution milky. o The flame test. * Get a lighter and a candle with a cotton wick. This test is better if you don’t have as much honey to spare. * Dip the cotton wick of the candle into a bit of the honey, and shake off the excess. * Attempt to light the wick. If it burns, then it is completely pure honey. If it refuses to burn, then the presence of water is not allowing the wick to burn. (If there is only a very small amount of honey on the wick, though, it might still burn. It will produce a crackling sound, and it would be best to blow out the wick and try it again this time using more honey.) o The absorption test. * Pour a few drops of honey on blotting paper and observe whether or not it is absorbed. If it’s absorbed, the honey’s not pure. * If you don’t have blotting paper, pour a little bit of honey on a white cloth, then wash the cloth. If there is any stain left by the honey, it is probably not pure. o The spiral test when pouring * When poured very slowly honey will flow as a spiral in a clockwise direction. This is because the honey molecule is non-symmetrical with a right-hand bias which causes the stream of honey to spin. |

youre so well travelled Cath !! … what part kaya of the PI havent you gone too ? … sa bagay, 7100 islands yan ! mostly parts of Luzon Kuya Nel 🙂
most of Visayas and Mindanao I already travelled around during my mid-twenties due to the work I did (fuera lang yata Sulu *grin*) Anyway for Luzon naman, I’ve always had a yen to see Laoag sana..ang yung northern beaches like those used in movies (e.g. “Hihintayin Kita sa Langit”) pero ewan ko ba…I feel lazy just thinking of doing bus trips here in Luzon versus if you were to tell me mag bus trip ako in Mindanao. Really weird, considering its a bit dangerous doing those kinds of trips in Mindanao versus Luzon… |

One question I had long time ago….wala bang tinatamaan ng kidlat diyan? Dito, pag may storm, everyone is told to take cover because of lightning strikes. My neighbor’s house burned down because of one….and my mom’s friend died after getting hit. Lightning is a real threat here, but I remember running out and playing during a storm when I was young in the Philippines. I wonder if there are atmospheric differences that would account for that….or if it is just as dangerous in the Phil. and we were just too naive to be afraid when we were young.

So what if there was bad storm over the island we were in, and that the river next to our hostel was rising?
We were determined to go boating and swimming and picture-taking, because we had traveled a long way from Manila to be here. Hence on this day, we hired a banca and armed with our trusty live-vests, we ventured out to sea.

Here’s one more thought for you, Cat, “The secret of a happy life is… lowered expectations.” What do you think? that statement reminds me of a Barbara Cartland romance I read back in high school..wherein the heroine says to our dark hero a similar thought and he replies back that she would make a good wife for a pastor 🙂
I’m ok with that idea – after all, when my expectations get surpassed, I feel a wonder and surprise, followed by happiness (for that moment). But it seems to me then that I may have lowered expectations but there is still this expectation in me of having those lowered expectations being surpassed? Uhm…wait!…1 pm na and no breakfast or lunch pa..I blame this going around and around on that lack of nutrition… |

but it looks like Valentine’s Day in Baguio is a good change of pace, yahoo!
The city is known for its mild climate. It is because of this that Baguio is nicknamed the “Summer Capital of the Philippines”. Owing to its high elevation, the temperature in the city is 8 degrees Celsius lower compared to the average temperature of the rest of the country. Average temperature ranges from 15 to 23 degrees Celsius. It is usually lower during the late and early months of the year.

My mom’s birthday falls smack inside the Holy Week days, plus I will be having my own too in a few days before that. This will be the first time in a long time that I have my birthday in Cebu as I usually just work on that day here in Manila and its just another stress-filled day.
I tried to fit in a trip to HK before or after Holy Week but the prices are prohibitive or the schedule is not good enough, hence I’ve decided to pray that my laptop will be ok while I am in Cebu for a 2-week working holiday 🙂
Another plus in this instance is that if all goes well,I will be accompanying Mommy Loy and Tito Rudy to Bantayan Island in Northern Cebu 😉

a little sweat & sacrifice won’t hurt CatH. Look at it at a brighter side, the Lord knows youre giving up something you like for HIM this Holy Week. Cebu has always had, in my memories, had a hot and humid weather. I always surmised before that the reason I could eat like a pig there and keep thin was that I kept perspiring 🙂 but during Holy Week? my goodness, I think its been seared into my memories how surprisingly hotter it got especially on Good Friday. I don’t know how it is nowadays though, with all the climate changes if my memories still apply.

What I meant was I play the guitar during Holy Week rites in our parish CAth. hmmm, whats a better way to say it ? oh I see, sorry Kuya Nel, but I was thinking kc you were going to take part in sort of pasyon na play…like enacting Jesus carrying the cross ..ewan ko bakit my imagination ran to that direction…nunca sa isip ko ang pag-play mo ng guitar for the choir..ehehehe…

meannlim said
actually, my family never left for holy week din. talagang rituals ang ginagawa namin. visita iglesias, way of the cross, the salubong and easter mass. but when i got married, my in-laws had a different take on holyweek. it meant vacation engrande…then, parang na gui guilty ako with how we spend it. so when we were able to live on our own…i was able to influence my hubby to do our rituals. and then he would usually request for a quick respite to either Tagaytay or a spa in the metro. ganon din kami before, especially when I was younger.
they say it was bad daw to be traveling or even doing something like going to the beach and splashing about on THAT Thursday and Friday. then the turning point came when I went with my friends from Fujitsu to Cagayan and then Camiguin and spent Holy Week there. Especially since Jong’s family had a sort of beachhouse perched atop the rocks by the beach (parang cantilado), ayon..the days were spend just lazing about. And since no lightning struck me and everything went well, Holy Week has been spent more and more on trips outside 🙂 Anyway, nag excuse ako sa sarili ko…hehehe..I said I could perform the rituals on other days like yung Way of the Cross and mga visita iglesia. On another note, a college bud of mine lives in Minglanilla, Cebu…and that has been known here for the ritual in Easter of meeting the Lord…I think its called “Sugat” (not “wound” but in bisaya its basic meaning is to meet) |

Just brush the veggies with olive oil. for the recipe above, it is using the oven for baking these veggies…in my home here in Manila, I only have an oven toaster..so its either that and in small amounts..or I just bring out my grill pan and place on top of the electric stove…
this is one reason why I miss being in Cebu..there its just easy to holler for charcoal briquettes and voila..minutes later…yummy and fragrant veggies na! |

Nice, healthy meal. Sweet onions will enhance the flavor of your baked dish too. if I grill, I usually line up red and green and yellow (for the color) pepper, courgettes, eggplant, onions, tomatoes…onions are sweet pag caramelized konti…

Yuck! oy, I will have you know, its delicious! you can squeeze the bitter juice out of it naman..and mixed with sliced onions, ginger, and whatever else my mom decides at the moment to put into it (along with native vinegar which is quite spicy)..its a treat!its the same recipe I think for what we do with the seaweeds (lato and guso) salad…yum!

eggplant with scrambled eggs? now that I’ve never had…how interesting..pano naman ginawa? boiled ang eggplant before its added with scrambled eggs? prepared separately? Of all the Filipino dishes, my wife loves fried eggplant the most to the point of her making it into perfection.
Eggplant is grilled to remove the outer skin, then dipped into eggs and then fried. With sweet and sour sauce, it sure is a winner. |

If you like veggies without meat, here’s one for you using your ingredients plus mushroom: zucchini stuffed with mushroom. You sauté your mushrooms with onions and garlic until brown, stuff your zucchini with it, and bake it to about 450 to 500 and with a slice of baguette, it’s almost a meal to itself. thanks for the recipe Mar…when I get better, I am going back to the grocery to stock up on the zucchini and try this out..this is what I like, easy to make meals!

for CatH ‘s network
Before I ran off for the rest of my errands, I thought of taking pics of Enishi and Kobey, the remaining two out of the five Japanese spitzes I had, before I went to Manila in 2004.
I had the idea of including these two in a presentation I was going to make to my boss 🙂 What can I say, I do miss having my pets with me.
However, both dogs are super-active and kept on moving around, barking and greeting and licking me happily so these are the only shots I had which weren’t examples of motion blur *grin*
Maybe next time….

Can you tell I don’t know much about having pets? I haven’t had a pet since the 70s; I had an apricot toy poodle who was no more than 5 lbs. My kids and their dad were all asthmatic, so we opted not to keep pets anymore.
As you know, Cat, parang meron na rin akong mga aso because of my neighbors’ dogs straying around here. Ok sana, except when they poop on my walkway…lol. |

Funny how dogs can have different personalities … we have 9 at home & each one has a personality of her own. ooh..pomeranians are cute..the last time I saw one up close and personal was at a store in Binondo…pagka-cute intawon 🙂
oh yes, each has its distinct personality…Kobey for one, will drop whatever food in her mouth, preferring to be petted by me and have some “lambing” time… Enishi prioritizes his food…drop a morsel in front of him, and he abandons me..*grin* |

in fact dogs have always been a constant with us…all the chickens, ducks, parrot, hamsters, arowana, goats, pigs, myna birds etc. have come and gone but dogs are always there in our home… but I never had a pet kitty *wink* which is a pity (rhymes pa ha).. but my maternal grandma had 2 cats and I got along well with them too…meow! |

Bakit may chain… will he run away if not chained? our dogs are never put in cages, but they are chained…and once or twice a day before they are let loose inside our garden area..but since we rent out the rooms inside, whenever we have tenant, it was difficult to keep them off ’em so all the dogs we have are like that at our house…
also, if they are let loose, naku! my mom gets high-blood pressure due to their digging the garden..hehe! so nowadays, I insisted they are taken out and exercised regularly by our old helper and have some freedom, but its really different if I am not in Cebu …*sigh* |

I don’t understand it though..aren’t pet owners there supposed to have some plastic bags handy to grab the dog’s poo if they do it outside? maybe the owners ought to have lessons in discipline *grin* |

These dogs are just so adorable. It’s tempting to run the fingers through their soft fluffy coat. oh yes, I love their fur….it reminds me of rugs…
I was quite naughty before…sometimes when I wash my feet and slippers outside the house (we have a “poso” kc near to the dogs), and then the dogs greet me..abah..hahaha..they didn’t know (as in walang kamalay-malay) but I used to rub my wet feet against them to dry ’em off *wink*…so part rubby-dubby time with my pets, at the same time, dry feet….. |

Nice pic. thanks, Enishi is not as handsome as the pups from the line of Snow, my 1st ever and most favorite Japanese Spitz..unfortunately…they are all gone *sobs*
even if this dog is quite headstrong, I like him because he drinks a lot of water without any prompting..his nose is soft and moist enough to make me think he is quite a healthy doggie |

At the minimum, they are violating laws against: 1. Permitting animals to trespass. 2. Animals causing unsanitary conditions. (You are right, Cat, owners are expected to carry poop bags and pick up after their pets.) 3. Unrestricted dogs in public; leash law. The president of our homeowners’ association suggested that I involve the police, but I decided to give the offending parties one more warning and hope that it helps. True, what you say….the human owners are the real culprits; I have nothing against the dogs who are just doing what comes with their nature. |

So sorry, Cat. I think its more of not using their common sense sometimes…
one dog I had before died – nag spray kc ng pampatay termites don sa likod…abah…e don ba tinali ang aso ko…e mahilig yun mag gnaw on wood, so ayon..poisoned, and it was a painful death am sure, nag-gasp na daw eh.. my point to them has always been this – since we chain our dogs, we should always be mindful where we place them and make sure they have plenty of clean water to drink and not where they can get bitten even by poisonous creatures… for Gummy, I don’t have the complete explanation, I was just told they tied her at the back of the house, and yon, namatay na..as in ha? ano yan, namatay sa heart attack? I don’t think its a neglect of the food because the usual practice has been twice a day (I don’t like fat dogs, feeling ko they are not healthy)… |
